How to Use Blank Tiles in Scrabble
There are only two blank tiles in a standard Scrabble set, and drawing one is often the difference between a competitive game and a runaway win. The blank itself scores zero, but it unlocks bingos, multipliers, and rescue plays nothing else can match.
The golden rule: blanks are bingo fuel
Top players spend a blank only when it scores at least 20–25 more points than the next-best play. The reason is simple: a blank reliably converts an awkward rack into a 7-letter, 50-point bingo.
If your immediate play scores 18 with a blank or 14 without, hold the blank. Over the course of a game you will average more by saving it for the bingo turn.
When to spend the blank early
There are three situations where spending a blank immediately is correct.
- You can play a bingo right now (always take it).
- The play covers a triple-word square and scores 40+ points.
- The board is closing and there are no realistic bingo lanes left.
Rack management with a blank
Once you have a blank, manage the other six tiles around it. Keep balanced vowels and consonants, and avoid duplicates. A rack of ?ERSTLA can play more bingos than almost any tile combination in the game.
Common bingo stems with a blank include SATIRE, RETINA, RAISIN, TRAINS, and ORATES. Memorising these stems lets you spot the bingo in seconds.
